Teacher Candidate | Sangeeta Bordoloi Lama |
Unit Title | Multiplication Concepts and Facts |
Lesson Title | Understand Multiplication |
Grade Level and Course | Grade 3 – Math |
Time Segment of Lesson | 90 minutes |
Standard(s) Addressed in Lesson: | Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7. |
Objective(s) of the Lesson
Students will be able to:
Understand that multiplication is repeated addition.
They will be able to write a multiplication sentence
They will be able to demonstrate mastery by writing addition statements as multiplication sentences.
Activity 1: Previous work review
Review Addition– Diagnostic Pre test from the book - 5 mins
Activity 2:
Student reads out the objective of the day.
Activity 3:
Read the Problem of the Day – Show the groups of like numbers on the number line.
Student Diversity and Differentiation of Instruction – (Demonstration of Standard 1 by assessing each students knowledge on the topic and using appropriate differentiation)
Student Diversity | Differentiation of Instruction |
ELL (After Activity 3 | Since 90% of this class are ELL students, after completing the test, I ask them to refer to their test and write what multiplication means to them.
Then we go over important terms such as repeated addition, multiplication (I will explain what multi means and ask them for examples). |
Accelerated Learners | Challenge these students to compare repeated addition with multiplication. They will write about what the first and second number in each multiplication sentence mean. |
Struggling Students | They will watch a Khan Academy video to review the concept of Multiplication being another way of doing repeated addition. |
Activity 4
Accelerated Learners: They complete a multiplication activity and colour the picture using the products as colour codes. | Struggling Students: Students cut out pictures of equal groups of like items and paste them in their notebook and write multiplication sentences. |
Formative and Summative Assessments- include open ended questions that will lead students to think deeply about the content and will also build on prior knowledge.
Formative Assessment | Summative Assessment |
A discussion on how students can use multiplication in real life. How does it help them? | None for the lesson |
Grab bag quiz with questions to the class about multiplication sentences. The bag will have pictures representing groups and the students will state the multiplication sentence. |
Big Ideas to be Addressed in the Lesson:
1. Students will discuss the connection between addition and multiplication.
2. We will also discuss the relevance of multiplication in our daily life. Students will conduct a survey where they will ask their parents and family members how they use multiplication every day.
Discussion Questions
Write out questions that you would like students to discuss in class, before class or after class because they are interesting, support higher order thinking, and make for a lively and engaging discussion. If discussions must happen outside class, what tool will you use to facilitate the discussion (e.g. Twitter)?
Why should or could we use multiplication instead of repeated addition?
What do the two factors in a multiplication sentence mean?
Discuss personal examples of using multiplication.
21st Century Knowledge and Skills
21st Century Knowledge and Skills | Teaching Strategies |
Collaboration | Students will engage in a Think Pair Share activity where they will represent repeated addition as multiplication sentences. They will also play a game Circles and Stars. (Details under activity) |
Critical Thinking | Students will discuss the relevance of using Multiplication instead of repeated addition. |
Teaching Strategies and Related Student Activities (Include Web 2.0 activities and innovative strategies,as appropriate):
Teaching Strategies and Activities: What are the teaching strategies and activities that you plan to use to help students meet the lesson’s objectives? What are the steps that you will take to deliver this lesson (e.g., introduce the author, read the poem, ask students to…)?
Introduce the concept of multiplication through the Diagnostic Test that students take where there is repeated addition. I will initiate a discussion to ask them how these statements with repeated addition could be written as multiplication sentences.
Differentiate activities and instruction based on prior knowledge.
As a class students will play Circles and Stars in pairs. Students work with a partner for the following activity. Each pair should have a die and scraps of paper (or they can make 8-page booklets). Show students how to play the game "Circles and Stars." The first partner rolls a die and draws that many large circles. The second partner does the same. Each partner then rolls the die again, in turn, and draws that many stars inside each of their circles. Together, participants figure out each of the totals. The total for each drawing is written on the drawing, under the circles and stars. Students play seven rounds with their partner. The winner is the one with the most stars overall, which requires students to add up the stars in all of their drawings. Next, I will ask students to work with their partner to figure out appropriate equations to write under each drawing. They can write equations showing repeated addition; they will also be prompted to write multiplication equations. They will then translate the meaning of the equation into words, such as "2 groups of 3 equals 6" for the equation 2 3 = 6. Pairs will then join up with other groups to compare the numbers and products that resulted from playing the game. We will explore their observations and discoveries in a whole class discussion.
Have closing discussions on the relevance of multiplication.
Review: Write down ideas on how you will review the topic, including notes on types of formative assessments that you will use during the lesson.
The Circles and Stars game and our discussions will be used as a Formative Assessment to assess students understanding of multiplication being an alternative to repeated addition.
If there is time left, students will take a grab bag quiz and look at the picture and state the multiplication sentence.
